>Treadmills are for runners?

>Back to the cold weather and that means back to the treadmill. While our workout room is tiny and doesn’t have that many machines, I have been grateful when I can get to the treadmill. Apparently it was the hot machine for the night because people were making up random things to do just to pass the time until a machine was empty.

One of my pet peeves in races are those who sprint and then walk, again and again, and you can never get around them. I just found something worse. Constant changing of movement on treadmills  can be distracting. The man next to me would sprint for about two minutes and then walk five, over and over. Treadmills can’t go from walking to sprinting very fast, so to me this feels like you are making your body ache more. Once he was done, a girl came over and would switch from the treadmill to the elliptical every couple of minutes, completely defeating the purpose of working out. If you’re going to work out, stick with one thing for a decent amount of time to get a benefit from it.

20 minutes on the treadmill last night, hoping to get to 25 on Wednesday night. Time means much more than distance on a treadmill.

>Only in Ohio can you have all four seasons in a weekend

>This past weekend was a very successful one, the exact training that I needed. Friday was bound to be a day that I needed to run, but because it was just a few flakes short of a blizzard, I didn’t think I would be running, let alone going anywhere. We shut down our office early, so after digging out my car, which became an exercise in itself, I was able to get home and got ready to run. There were three college guys in there, as they didn’t have classes because of the weather. And I’m pretty sure they hadn’t showered since the morning before. I got on the bike while the treadmills were full. After 5 minutes on the bike, just enough to loosen up, the room was empty. I did the treadmill for 15, and I felt ok. Didn’t feel great, but glad I was there.

Saturday the streets were clear and it wasn’t too cold. I ran with another Muskingum Alumni, we ran to the college to see the OAC Championship meet. There weren’t really any sidewalks, and drivers thought we were crazy for running outside, even on the road. It felt nice to get outside and run compared to the treadmill staring at the mirror the whole time. And of course, what better way to finish a run, but to get some pancakes.

Took yesterday off, my legs were a little sore, but the weather for the next couple of days looks promising, ok, by now, anything above 30 looks good in my book. Is it spring yet?

>Music or Silence?

>I was able to get a pretty good workout in last night. I ran 20 minutes on the treadmill, and 10 minutes on the bike. I’m not following my schedule like I had hoped, but I’m finding ways to make my training easier than knowing I have so many days to get ready for this race. When I’m on the treadmill, I either work towards a mileage or a time, I tell myself I have to get past what I decide on, and if I want to keep going, great. If not, then I at least made the goal. If I had the chance, I’d rather be training in 60 degree weather outside on trails. When I’m on the treadmill, I feel like I’m not able to run to my full potential, that I’m always going too slow. But maybe that’s good when starting back up.

Since I started running inside, I listen to music. I plug in my headphones to  my phone, and scan for some music to pump me up ( Usually end up listening to 20 Anberlin songs) When I run outside, I can never listen to music. I like hearing what’s going on around me, and its safer too. What do you enjoy? Music or listening to your surroundings?

>Focus now, worry later

>Making a training schedule was harder than I thought. While I knew where I wanted my end goal to be, finding the right mileage so I wouldn’t burn myself out was hard. If I didn’t make this schedule, I would never get there. Let’s be honest, if you have something to follow, you’re going to do it. I’m able to build up to 4,5 miles quickly, but for some reason it was 7,8, and 9 that scared me. Knowing I’d be running that within a few months make me rethink my whole way around this. Silly, I’ve run a 10.8 miles race in the middle of winter in Indiana. I couldn’t feel my feet within a mile, am I seriously worried about running 13.1 in mid May in Cleveland? The weather is probably going to be either high at 75/80 or low 50/55. There is no middle here. Both would be better than the race in Indiana.

Here’s my schedule for next week. I plan on running and biking everyday so that all my muscles will be in shape, and hopefully this will make it easier on my body once I start getting into the harder days. Hopefully this works out. And, GO PACK GO! Green Bay all the way 🙂

Monday- Run 2, Bike 5
Tuesday- Class
Wednesday Run 2, Bike 5
Thursday -Class
Friday- Run 3, Bike 5
Saturday-Run 4, Bike 4
Sunday- Bike 6

>Snow doesn’t have to slow you down

>For many people, these past few days have been cold, windy, and covered in snow. The snow storm that had 29 states issue warnings came and went, and now we are stuck with even more snow. Growing up in Ohio, specifically Cleveland area, this is something that you get used to. We get tons of snow, usually half from the lake, and half from storms like the past few days. Unfortunately, we had inches of ice that made walking, driving, and even running a challenge. I chose to stay inside to workout, like always in the winter, but I do have suggestions for those of you who like to run outside in the winter. I strongly believe in YakTrax. Yes, go ahead and look it up if you aren’t familiar with them. They are one of the best inventions for runners. They are rubber bottoms that include coils on bottom to protect you from ice and snow. YakTrax can be used for running, walking, hiking, and are for all ages, both men and women. They come in many colors, but I have the bright yellow/greenish ones, that even glow in the dark! So slight obsession with them, I used them all the time in high school in college. Below I attached a picture of what they look like, they can be found online and many running catalogs. Give them a try!

So back to training. I was in the mood last night to run on the treadmill, a first, right. But someone was using our only one. So I went with the bike, I can’t complain. I got in 6 miles, at a 14.2 mile pace. Not bad, my pace is getting faster, so I’m hoping this will help me start up with the running. I’m working on my training schedule and will share it soon. Only 100 days until the half marathon!

>Registration is only a click away

>I finally registered for the Cleveland Half Marathon. I had gone to the website many times looking at all of the information, but I sat down and actually did it. Well, stared at the register button for about 20 minutes. It’s easy to enter in your information, but when you hit that last button, it’s done. You’re committed and there is no turning back. This was key, I had to do it now, or else I would keep putting it off until May 14th…the day before the race.

I’m not sure what I was more nervous for, the fact that now I actually have to do it, and there is no backing out, or the fact that I could very easily be doing it alone. But, I’m glad I did it. I’ve decided that not only blogging about my training, but setting out a training plan is going to help. With starting up my MBA classes again, I’ll have two nights a week that I won’t be able to workout, but having them in the middle of the week, I’ll be less likely to skip out on the others I plan.  I hope to work on it later and share it. Any tips on ways to help me train?

>Good Support

>Running a half marathon is hard work, training for it is even harder. I don’t have the motivation to go out and try to run 5 or 6 miles. That’s because it’s the middle of January, and May still seems so far away. The biggest thing needed right now is support from friends and family. While its great to have that the day of the race, having them there to cheer you on during training is even better. It’s the hardest part. Of course when you should up at the starting line, you’ll try hard. But what or who pushes you now, helps you in the end.

One of my best support groups is the cross country team from Muskingum. Four years of running together and lasting friendships that have made it past college. I jokingly suggested that we all run the half together, thinking it probably wouldn’t happen since we are from all over Ohio. Well, we have our team again. As of now, two of us are doing the half, and two are doing the full. Even though we aren’t all doing the same race and won’t end with the same time, having the support of those who know you and will be there make all the difference. With 107 days left, I better get my (actual) training started!

>Consistently Inconsistent

>I was finally able to get into the workout room last night. I decided on the bike, I knew with my inconsistency that this wouldn’t make me want to stop in 5 minutes. I started off with listening to some Anberlin, my favorite music, and really got going. Within a matter of 25 minutes, I had gone 6 miles, and was biking at a 14.2 mile average speed. It felt great. Looking back to last summer, the fact that I did a 30 mile bike ride with no training, I should be able to do a 13.1 run with training. It’s just the fact of actually doing it.

After this, I attempted the one machine I could easily go without. I hate the treadmill, but because I was the only one in there, I tried it without being too embarrassed. Bad idea, my legs were tired from biking, and I was mentally breaking myself down with not being in shape. I did 10 minutes, decided that was enough.

Upside to all of this, I was able to bike 6 miles, and run 10 minutes (as of now, its more of the time than the mileage) and ate a pound of pasta without any guilt 🙂

>Fitness Trial

>Over the last week, I can say that I have been motivated, but haven’t been allowed to work out.
The weather has been in the single digits with windchill, so going outside to run has be a definite no. However, I follow Cleveland Marathon on twitter (@clevemarathon) and entered into their weekly Marathon Monday giveaway. You basically have to find the answer to their trivia question on their website, and the one of the first two people to answer. I got a free trial at Fitworks for a personal meeting with a trainer. I’m excited because I’m hoping this would help to make me jump start my training into a full time job.

Goals for this week:
Bike 20 Miles
Elliptical for 30 Minutes
Run 20 Minutes
