Spring Gear Up

Even though there is a little bit of snow on the ground, it’s finally spring! Like many of you, as soon as the temperature hit 40 I was out running in shorts and long sleeves. Looking back, it probably wasn’t the best gear to wear, but after the brutal winter we’ve had, anything above 40 felt amazing! But just as quickly as the temperate rose to 70, then back down to 20, perfect running weather will be an every day occurrence. I wanted to share my go to outfits for spring/summer weather, with the hope that maybe we’re completely done with the snow for this year.

Long Sleeve

  • Nike’s Long Sleeve Miler Shirt – A great shirt for in between temps or pre race warm up. They’ve changed the design a little over the years, but this shirt is always in rotation for me.
  • OIselle’s Flyte Long Sleeve – Breathable, and stylish, the flight texture keeps your warm and cool. The material hugs you, but stretches for comfort. Added bonus, birds and a motivational “fly” on the back.

Short Sleeve

  • Oiselle’s Winona Tank – New to me, but oh so comfortable. The feel of this shirt is heavenly. It’s perfect for layering or mixing with arms sleeves.
  • Nike’s G87 Tank – This tank, it’s just so light that I forget I’m wearing it. Long run tested and approved.
  • Nike’s Sport V-Neck Tank – Light and non form fitting, these are perfect for the most humid days when you don’t want anything sticking to you.
  • C9 by Champion Racer Back Tanks – No link, but over the years Target has had a great selection of racer back tanks. I have at least 5 I keep in constant rotation and are perfect for layering.

  • Oiselle’s Lesley Knicker – Being so short, I’ve struggled with capris turning into leggings, but these hit me just right. They hug me just right and are perfect for in between temps.
  • Nike’s Rival Shorts – Short, comfortable and breathable, these shorts entered rotation last year. They’re perfect for hiding sweat during humid, long runs.
  • Nike’s Tempo Short – My old faithful shorts. I have way too many pairs of these, but the colors and patterns are too fun to pass up on. They can seem a bit puffy and the length varies, but they’ve been with me for years, it’s hard to give them up.
  • Oiselle’s Rogas – These came into rotation last summer and are by far my favorite. Comfort and coverage, I can live in these for days.

Clearly I have enough clothes to keep me covered no matter what the weather, but you really need to have options. Or at least that’s what I tell myself. I buy a few new items each year, but mostly keep everything I own in rotation. More options, means less time doing laundry!

I also wanted to touch on a few important tips as the weather transitions from 40 and comfortable to 80 and miserable.

Stay hydrated – One of the hardest things during changing seasons is staying hydrated. As the temperature rises, along with humidity, you need to make sure you’re taking in the proper amount of fluids. Invest in a fuel belt or water bottle that you can carry. It may seem obnoxious at first, but you’ll definitely need it as the weather warms up.

Cover Up – The sun will showing up a lot more during your runs, so you need to stay covered if you can. Start applying sun screen before your run, invest in some shades and keep your head covered with a hat.

Check for Spots – I’m a sucker for wanting to get tan during the summer, but it can be hazardous as well. Skin cancer is unfortunately on the rise and can happen at any age. Do yourself a favor and get a skin cancer screening once a year. Your body will thank you.

What are your go to spring outfits? What’s your tip for spring training?

Friday Faves

Another month of my favorite things is here! It turns out that most of these are running related this month, but that’s ok. Hopefully you’ll find one of these items to be something you can’t live without, and they’ll be on your favorites list too!

Picky Bars – I finally hopped on the Picky Bars train and I’m so glad I did. I’ve been a long time lover of Clif Bars, but sometimes they don’t agree with my stomach. I tried Picky Bars and have yet to have any issues while running. New long run fuel? I think so.

House of Cards – After hearing all the buzz about House of Cards, we decided to sit down and test out a few episodes. This quickly turned into watching as much as we could in our free time….hello binge Nextflix! I didn’t expect to like House of Cards, but I can’t get enough. I’m also a big fan of the parody, House of Carbs….mmmmm pasta.

Oiselle Lux Side Zip Top – Just as soft as the original Lux long sleeve, the Side Zip is perfect for layering in the cold. I wish I would have gotten this sooner to enjoy the frigid temps!

Oiselle Charcoal Joggings – I’ll admit, I’ve been a big fan of the Asics Thermopolis LT Tights for as long as I could remember. But I’ve worn them a bit thin, and I needed something else to add into rotation. I tried the charcoal joggings and it was love at first run. They’ve been warm enough to deal with our crazy winter and they fit like a glove.

Nuun of the month: Cucumber Mint – Call me crazy, but I love cucumber chunks in my water. So when I tried Nuun’s Cucumber Mint U Natural Hydration, I instantly felt I was sipping water on a hot summer day. It may sound like an odd combination, but it’s so refreshing and may be come my summer drink of choice. U Natural Hydration is all natural flavored with vitamins and essential electrolytes, the perfect drink tablet to keep you going all day long. The U Natural Hydration flavors are often over looked with Nuun, but I have yet to find one that I don’t like.

Well there’s my favorites for this month. I have a feeling that April’s will be extra special….

Friday Faves

I’ve decided to jump on the bandwagon and get on board with sharing my Friday Faves. I won’t do this every week, but about once a month I’ll share what I’m currently digging, and hope that maybe you’ll eventually like it too. They’re not all running related, and the amount may vary. They’re my current favorites, so that’s ok!

Buckeye Woods – My absolute favorite place to run in Medina is Buckeye Woods. This park has it all, and has spectacular views no matter what time of day or year you go. With asphalt, crushed limestone and dirt paths, they have enough trails to keep you entertained for miles. Buckeye Woods also connects to the Chippewa Inlet, which takes you directly to Chippewa Lake, the former home of the Chippewa Lake Amusement Park. I could go on and on about how much I love this place, but instead I’ll share a few pictures I’ve taken.

Quaker Steak & Lube’s Buffalo Chicken Mac & Cheese – Like most people, I’ve only known Quaker Steak for their wings. In high school, we’d go there at least once a week after practice and stuff our face with as many wings as we could. It wasn’t until a few weeks ago that I discovered their menu had more, specifically Buffalo Chicken Mac & Cheese. Being a big consumer in both pasta and cheese, I accepted the challenge of making sure this was to my expectations. It was, and now I’m on the search for a copy cat recipe. So the next time you’re there, give it a try, I guarantee you won’t be disappointed.

“Crunchy chicken tenders coated with Arizona Ranch® over creamy Radiatore pasta tossed in Guinness Beer cheese sauce! Topped with Provolone, Bleu cheese crumbles, fresh celery and tomato! Served with grilled garlic bread” – Quaker Steak & Lube Menu Description (yum!)

Oiselle Long Sleeves – Now that the cold weather is officially here, my running clothes have transitioned from tank tops to long sleeves. Although it’s not quite cold enough to bundle in 10 layers yet, I’ve found two shirts that are perfect for 50 degree weather and 30 degree weather. Both by Oiselle, these two tops are going to be a staple in my winter wardrobe, and possibly grow in the amount of colors I’ll own by spring.

  • Lux Layer – I have this in grey and cannot believe how comfortable it is. The texture is like non other and naturally includes thumb holes. Windy, chilly day? This is the shirt for you and will keep you toasty and warm.
  • Flyte LS – I got this in coral (the color that works for about 99% of people) and love it. It’s definitely a shirt to wear with layers or days above 40, but the wicking material helps to prevent freezing in your own sweat. My favorite part is the word “fly” on the back, perfect motivation for those chilly runs.

The BlackList – We added this to the list of shows to check out this year, and it instantly became a favorite. James Spader is perfect in this role and Megan Boone is quickly becoming a favorite. It you haven’t seen this show, I definitely recommend it.

So that’s what I’m digging this month, and clearly it’s a little bit of everything. Hope you give one of these a shot, I can guarantee you won’t be disappointed.

What are you currently digging? Are any of these on your favorites list?
